Yesterday I experienced several issues: I was playing Genshin Impact while browsing YouTube videos via Chrome. Suddenly, the game began to malfunction—some assets failed to load and it crashed abruptly. After trying to close it, the window remained stuck showing "Genshin is not responding." When I opened Task Manager, the game could be ended normally, which seemed normal. However, I noticed my taskbar was unresponsive—I couldn't launch Explorer or open the start menu. In Task Manager, I clicked on the Windows Explorer process and pressed Restart. This time it didn’t restart the explorer. The computer was locked in a soft state; I couldn’t close it properly or reboot. I thought it was fine, so I powered off the machine. Later, Chrome remained functional with no freezing. Other programs like Discord, Steam, and Razer Synapse worked without issues. My Photoshop profile returned to its default settings, with no custom brushes or actions.

Some errors appeared—Dropbox failed to start and displayed a permissions error message. Steam couldn’t launch because it couldn’t access its installation folder. Genshin Impact would show file verification problems, indicating a network or file issue. My Photoshop UI reset to default, and most applications were operational except for the mentioned errors.

During troubleshooting, Chrome worked perfectly, and I didn’t see a hard freeze. When I turned it back on, everything loaded normally again. Occasionally, I needed to force shutdown by holding the power button.

Addendum: Chrome performed well throughout; no significant lockup occurred. After rebooting, all systems functioned correctly, though occasional errors persisted.

Regarding file access, I couldn’t delete any files on the 2TB drive that housed Genshin, Steam, and Dropbox—files would display a "Can't read the source file or disk" error. Other drives remained unaffected. I attempted to copy data but encountered write protection warnings. The PC runs Windows 10 21H1 with a Ryzen 9 5950X and an RTX 3090, and I’m using a 2TB drive (Samsung 980 Pro NVME) for games and programs. My specs include a 1TB SSD, an 8TB Samsung 870QVO, and two mechanical drives.

I also noticed I can’t delete files on the 2TB drive, even when trying to copy or move them. The error persists, making it difficult to recover data. I’m currently facing significant frustration, as the problem seemed widespread across multiple storage devices. Any guidance or further troubleshooting steps would be greatly appreciated.

It seems the drive is failing and has entered read-only mode, possibly to allow a backup of current data.

If that's the case, it's a shame it failed after only little more than a year of use, hopefully I can get help from Samsung customer service. I'm still troubleshooting, tried removing the protection through the "diskpart" command, and the attributes on the drive are currently as shown in the image. I'm confused since it has 2 settings, there's "Read-only" which is set to "no", and "Current Read-only State", which is set to "Yes"... couldn't find a way to change that one yet, and there's not much documentation about it around, most of them refer to the "Ready-only" attribute. Samsung offers solid coverage and reliable assistance – I’m confident they’ll provide a new drive.
