System shutting down during gameplay on a PC
Hey there. I’m facing a problem where my machine shuts down when certain games start. The setup includes: cooler from Cooler Master, H100i CPU, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, ASUS ROG STRIX B650-A, and a bunch of RAM, GPU, and storage components. I recently bought the Ryzen 7 7800X3D bundle from Micro Center and it performed well initially. After upgrading my monitor to a 1440p widescreen one, everything was fine.
However, earlier this year I played Rust with friends and noticed the screen would go black and the system would restart—sometimes in about ten minutes, other times for around 45 minutes before it would turn off. This was really annoying. Even after trying various fixes like fresh drivers, changing settings, and updating BIOS, nothing seemed to work. I also tried running MemTest on my RAM, changed PCI lanes, disabled XMP, and even swapped out the monitor to an older one. Still, the issue remains.
I’ve checked temperatures and found no unusual readings. I can run Furmark without power interruptions, but Nightmare and Rust keep causing problems. The troubleshooting logs show a driver error around event 41, pointing to a possible GPU or display issue. But despite all my efforts, the screen would black out and the machine would reboot quickly.

It might be a graphics driver problem with the game. Consider reducing your GPU's maximum clock speed by around 200MHz in Adrenalin.
Thanks for the update. It seems the game worked well initially with FSR, but then it stopped working after a short session. Now I experience freezing at the menu, and even though some animations stay active, I can't interact with the interface or open Task Manager. This is the first time I've seen such issues.
It appears the GPU has issues with its VRAM and it seems to be brand new.
Typically, without a BSOD you’d suggest a PSU issue. Your GPU also looks like it’s failing, which makes me think the PSU might have caused the problem. On the flip side, the GPU could be the main cause if it’s still under warranty—consider replacing it. Please send the photo they took; they’ll likely replace it for you.
The 6700 XT and PSU were bought in the same month, October 2023.
Thank you, I wish it wasn't under such trying times. I pray the motherboard and cpu are fine. I don't have a UPS and we had an electrician service the outlets within the last 4 years. I do have a BIOS switch on the 6700 XT one of the profiles is not stable and when I got the card, flipping the switch did stop my BSOD in Fortnite. I believe I swapped the cables when I played Rust and it was giving me this issue but it can't hurt to try it again
I hope it stays cooked. It handles other games well and can handle stress without breaking down, though some games seem to shut down your PC. Initially I thought the power supply might be faulty, but it's a CP-9020200-NA bought in October 2023. I wasn't sure about a defective unit since I trusted that model more than the 6700 XT, just based on gut feeling. The GPU is covered under warranty and they've already told me we can start the return process—just need my invoice. Thanks for the response.
