System shutting down during gameplay of RDR2
I have a curious problem. My computer runs smoothly and completes tasks without trouble. However, when I play RDR2 it runs for hours if I'm actively playing. Problems arise only when I pause—after about 5 to 10 minutes—I return to a fresh Windows login screen. At first, I thought the power supply was the issue, as many people mentioned that. But my new Corsair 850W unit is only five weeks old. Others say bad PSUs cause frequent restarts or blue screens, yet my machine doesn’t restart otherwise and never shows a blue screen. Then I considered overheating; temperatures stay between 67-73°C during gameplay and 36-40°C when idle. I re-applied thermal paste and replaced the cooler just as a precaution, but the issue still occurs only while paused in RDR2. It’s strange since it doesn’t happen when I’m not playing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My specs are: motherboard ASRock B550M-C, CPU 5800X, GPU Zotac Gaming 3080, cooler Noctua U12 with two fans, RAM Tforce Vulcan 2x8GB, PSU Corsair RM850x.
I’d also check if PSU protections are triggering, excluding blue screens, just restarts. Could be the GPU is getting too much load?
I disabled the automatic restart feature, reinserted my RAM for a fix, and it worked again—no BSOD. I also ran the Windows memory diagnostic and got no problems. However, when it restarts, the small DRAM light on my motherboard lights up, which might be normal during a restart. I’m still unsure what’s going on. @Skiiwee29
RAM can handle diagnostics and stress tests yet trigger reboots. I lowered my overclock from 3600 to 3466 since the PC would restart several hours after encoding, even though initial tests at 3600 showed normal performance. I could have kept the system running for a month doing regular tasks. If RAM fails unexpectedly, it will bring the system down. Try lowering RAM to 2133 and check if the issue persists.
