System shuts down unexpectedly Device reboots without warning Unstable performance issues
Hi, I’m looking for some community support regarding a title-related concern. The issue involves my PC restarting unexpectedly, regardless of load or idle state. Right now I don’t have an external GPU, so the load factor isn’t the problem. I’ve tried using the default BIOS settings, but it still doesn’t work. It appears restarts happen in intervals—every few weeks there’s a pattern. Everything seems normal otherwise: temperatures are fine, RGB LEDs stay steady during reboots. Full specs: Gigabyte Z370 Gaming, 5 i7 8700K, 16 GB DDR4, Corsair RAM (2x), Samsung 970 ECM M.2 x2, Samsung 870QVO Corsair Ax1200i (previously had RTX 3080, planning to upgrade to RTX 4090).
It doesn't display an instant black screen on restart, but it may resemble a window shutting down. Given its age, a thorough reset with proper discharge could help.
In that scenario the board really benefits from a fresh take out module with heatsinks and CMOS battery. Press the power button and clear the CMOS for two minutes, then rinse in water making sure it’s fully submerged. Submerge it in a bucket of water for about an hour without using any detergent. Let it sit for a day or two depending on the weather. You might also try a dishwasher, but since you don’t have one, a manual soak works just as well. I’ve faced similar problems with my P6T Deluxe v2 and Z77 Extreme4—my Z77 didn’t work, but a simple soak in water later solved it. My P6T Deluxe v2 is still fine now.
I’m taking things seriously. I’ve resolved several boards with this unexpected shutdown problem using the same approach, and only one didn’t work—this stubborn H61 in China.
there’s absolutely no danger of getting hurt by dunking in water once the board is fully drained. You’ve already done this many times, and most boards with pesky shutdown glitches have been fixed. If you’re thinking about spending money on an outdated setup, go ahead—but consider upgrading to a used b3/4/550 or a 5600(x)/5800x if you plan to swap boards. Probably only a few fools will buy an 8700k for $100–150.
