System shuts down unexpectedly and restarts itself.
Hello, I'm sharing this for a friend of mine. They've been facing problems where their PC freezes briefly, causing peripherals to shut down and restart. It also leads to temporary audio loss and a buzzing sound in their headphones. I've updated all drivers, fixed system files, run virus scans, and confirmed they're clean. Based on what I know, it seems like a failing hardware component might be the issue. Have others encountered this situation or any suggestions for resolving it? Thanks.
Hardware issues can occur, along with unstable power supply. I’d check the PSU first before the wall outlet, focusing on voltage fluctuations or dropping wattage. Even if it’s outdated, a replacement might be worth trying to see if it resolves the problem. Peripherals seem to be toggling off and on rather than just losing connection—possibly a Windows update is needed. Generally, most systems would trigger a BSOD, but it doesn’t appear to be happening here, so Windows might not be the main culprit. Edited September 4, 2022 by Bombastinator
The PSU is only a few months old and seems unlikely to be the cause. They moved into a college dorm recently, and the problem appeared after that move. Possibly an outlet issue? No BSODs or crashes have occurred. There’s been occasional stuttering or freezing followed by normal operation, but streaming on Discord causes audio drops and requires restarts. Peripheral connections appear to be intermittent—plugged in and out several times. If power delivery is the concern, it’s surprising the system doesn’t shut down. The voltage fluctuations or inconsistent wattage seem plausible. I’ll suggest they test another outlet if possible. Thanks for your feedback.
If conditions remained static, I’d check for changes in CPU activity—either increasing or decreasing. One observation notes that USB devices aren’t reconnecting properly again. The process of establishing a USB connection isn’t clear to me. It’s possible a power fluctuation would trigger a series of beeps as the UPS restarts. Alternatively, since the device is already plugged in, this might not be occurring. I’m unsure about the exact cause. It could stem from the power outlet, a motherboard component, or even a Windows system issue. A simple system refresh won’t interfere with data.
