System shuts down shortly upon installing the new GPU
Hello, welcome! I understand you're having trouble with your PC that shuts off shortly after turning it on. This issue began today after you upgraded your GPU from a Radeon HD 7770 1GB to a GTX 970 Gaming 4GB. You used DDU with the clean install and shutdown option, but the PC still powers on briefly before cutting out, whether you start from BIOS or via SSD. Even when trying without an SSD or HDD, it keeps shutting down. It shows up with both GPUs connected via a DVI cable, so those might not be the main cause. I’m not sure if your motherboard has any video output ports and I’m uncertain about whether your CPU has integrated graphics. The PCIe slot where you installed the GPU doesn’t have any video outputs, and I haven’t seen any damage there. This problem also occurs when using the second PCIe slot with the 7770 GPU, and even without a GPU at all. I’ve tried different RAM configurations—1 stick or multiple in slots 1-3 and 2-4—but nothing changes the outcome. I also checked the CMOS battery and tested unplugging cables, but nothing resolved it. It happens even when I power on with just the CPU installed. I changed the thermal paste recently and checked temperatures, but it still drops quickly. My specs are: CPU AMD Fx-8350, GPU Radeon HD 7770 1GB, PSU Cooler Master Gx Bronze 650W, motherboard Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 ATX AM3+, 1TB SSD. I use a Corsair cooling system and have two extra fans in the case. If anyone has experience with this situation, please let me know what you think or any tips that might help.
I just finished cleaning the case and fans, and now it doesn’t shut down right away after a short time. This suggests overheating might have played a role. I plan to power it on with both RAM sticks, the new GPU, and see if it functions properly and remains stable in BIOS settings.
I also reset everything and got the same outcome before. But I managed to keep the BIOS active for a few minutes without any issues with the GTX 970. The issue only came back when I tried to boot from my SSD. Right now I'm attempting to boot into BIOS using the 7770 to determine if the GPU is the cause or something else is at play.
Do you enter troubleshooting steps? If yes, attempt to boot into safe mode using a network connection. Install DDU, the newest NVIDIA drivers, and remove AMD GPU drivers via uinstall. Cut off the network and restart, then apply the downloaded NVIDIA drivers. Once back online, reconnect your system.
However... it seems your hardware appears quite outdated—perhaps the power supply is no longer delivering sufficient voltage for the current GPU.
It doesn't really matter since the shutdown happens regardless of an SSD connection, so I can't download or enter safe mode. My PSU appears to be sufficient for now, even with the old GPU, and it shouldn't fail. I've double-checked the power specs and thought it should hold up. Recently, my CPU was overheating a lot, so I looked into the cooling system—no heat transfer, strange noises, and extreme temperatures when I checked BIOS settings before it shut down. I replaced the CPU, which was quite old. I haven't connected anything yet, but I'm sure it's the CPU issue because the PC didn't power off when I tried without the CPU power, even after a long run.
