System restarts repeatedly following a CPU upgrade
When the system restarts multiple times before launching the OS, it usually points to a RAM problem. It seems the mixed modules might be having trouble connecting properly, causing the computer to operate at a reduced level. I recommend removing one module and testing if the issue persists, then try the other (such as powering up twice). The most probable cause is poor contact leading to lower performance settings.
I updated using three different sticks (all 1600mhz), two with 8GB and one with 4GB. I tried dual channel and then single-channel, but the problem persisted. I observed that after a few reboots, the PC would freeze during the BIOS screen, repeating the same cycle until it either restarts normally or freezes in the Windows logo. When it froze in Windows mode, I had to power off and on again. If I tried three more times, it would enter Safe Mode with options 2, 7, or 8. After many attempts with all three sticks, the behavior became unpredictable—sometimes it worked, other times it didn’t. Now I’m unsure if it’s a RAM issue anymore, but it’s really confusing. It’s not the end of the world, but it’s frustrating. The PC still functions once it boots up, but this keeps happening every time I turn it on.
Remember that the BIOS can be set to display or hide information, and it otherwise presents the motherboard brand's logo or the Windows logo until it transitions to the Windows interface. For instance, Dell consistently shows its logo throughout. If the system isn't experiencing a BSOD or freezing, but instead just stalls, it might point to a CPU problem—such as overheating—or a faulty chip. I’d likely reinsert the CPU, blow compressed air to clear any debris from the socket, reapply thermal paste, and consider using an aftermarket cooler. Standard stock coolers often struggle to maintain good contact once removed, since they depend on the motherboard's PCB holes, whereas aftermarket tower coolers generally provide better connection.
The attempt didn't resolve the issue either. I swapped out the stock fan on one of the tower coolers, but the temperatures stayed high. I also tried connecting the PC directly to the power supply to eliminate the surge protector, yet that didn't fix it. I added another 120mm fan just to check, but nothing changed. I'm still considering using a different motherboard, though finding LGA 1155 ones is tough in my area.
