Hey there, I recently purchased a 5900x and a Noctua NH-D15. I've been noticing it gets quite warm during idle speeds. Some folks mention the 5000 series tends to overheat or that most people don’t really idle much. It seems strange that I’m reaching 50°C in BIOS settings even though nothing appears to be running. On Windows, I can switch to a power-saving plan, but otherwise I’m stuck between 45-50°C with quick jumps to 50-60°C while using less than 5% CPU. It’s puzzling how the voltage and clock ramp up so slowly for such light tasks. My PC has a P500a with strong airflow and four case fans—three front and one exhaust. I also have the newest BIOS, released just last week since I built it, so I’m wondering if updating could help or cause issues. The temperature readings look normal: Cinebench R23 shows 65-68A and AIDA64 at 71°C. Maybe my thermal paste application wasn’t perfect, but wouldn’t high load temps be expected anyway? I used the NT-H1 paste that came with the cooler. If you think it’s still worth reapplying, I can try again but would appreciate any advice beforehand. Thanks.

They're doing a great job keeping the temperatures stable, so you don't need to be overly concerned about the idle readings.

Also, reapplying thermal compound probably won’t help much since your temperatures are already very low. It’s likely you’ve applied the paste correctly. If your load temps remain high, it suggests the issue isn’t with the paste but possibly with other factors. Switching pastes usually only causes a small change—often just a few degrees at most.

Right...Yeah, I was going to originally reapply the paste when I first saw the idle temps but it didn't make too much sense when the load temps were good. And yeah looking at the benchmarks, I'm only seeing 2-4C difference between the Grizzly and the NT-H1. Thanks.

These resting temperatures shouldn’t be typical. With two active streams and many open tabs, your GPU is running at 33°C and a cooler is running low. Your current idle speed is around 2.196 MHz, jumping to about 3.8 MHz on a couple of cores. It’s possible that people with elevated idle temps are actually running at lower clock speeds when idle.

Your current idle speed is around 2.196 MHz, jumping to about 3.8 MHz on a couple of cores. It’s possible that people with elevated idle temps are actually running at lower clock speeds when idle.

My frequency will almost always stay at 3.674 minimum. A couple cores drop to 2.9 for a split second but that's it. Even turning power saver mode on will keep it at constant 3.6GHz and lower the temperature but never really below 3.6. Edit: Not sure if this is true but seeing a few people saying that you won't see the frequency drop too much since if the core isn't being used, it's put to sleep which won't show a frequency. I was using other monitoring tools for the frequency but using Ryzen Master seems to back that up a bit, most cores sleeping with a couple under 1000
