I've experienced this problem for roughly a week, but no search has provided a solution. Essentially, dwm.exe is consuming all my memory while I use the PC regularly and with a high GPU usage of around 35%. This isn't related to gaming; it's about everyday online schoolwork and eventually Chrome after just one hour, which causes my full 16GB RAM to be taken over by dwm.exe, resulting in inevitable crashes. I've tried the basics: updated Windows 10, refreshed display drivers, reinstalled my GTX 1070 driver from Invidia's site, adjusted power settings and personalization. I also ran system troubleshooters and virus scans—CPU and GPU temperatures are normal, airflow is fine. It seems dwm.exe is accumulating data from my activities but not releasing it when not needed. The performance fluctuates with usage, but memory usage never drops. If anyone can assist before a full Windows reinstall, it would really help. Also, I've used a triple-screen setup since the PC was built about two years ago, without these issues. This might be relevant.

It seems like you're experiencing a memory issue. Would you like to proceed with a clean installation?

Hey there! It's great to connect. I'm still getting familiar with computers, so things like "clean install" might sound a bit confusing. Would you like me to explain it in simpler terms?

I want to set up a brand new Windows installation from the ground up. Windows 10 often causes problems, so when I run into unexpected issues with no other fixes, I usually do this. A memory leak happens when a program takes up space but doesn’t let the system know it’s finished using it.

I just set up this account since I face the same problem too. RX480 16GB DDR4 3200 (operating at 3200MHz, DOCP enabled in BIOS) – tried without DHCP, 5600X (not overclocked...) – ROG B550-F-Gaming (latest BIOS update yesterday) 500GB SATA SSD (O.S.) 500GB N.V.M.E (Steam) SuperFlower 650W PSU. First, no – this isn’t a bitcoin miner. It’s a fresh Windows installation I’m currently running. Everything here is brand new, and the trouble began about a week ago, maybe two weeks later. I reinstalled Windows last night. Using the default GPU drivers (probably 2017) that come with Windows, the problem is far less frequent. Installing the newest RX480 GPU drivers (21.4.1) This issue keeps happening almost every time, especially when anything uses the screen (like Explorer extensions or YouTube thumbnail generation). Right now it’s active with the desktop window manager and client server running at 40-70% usage. Don’t waste time reinstalling Windows. I did that last night and the problem still exists on 20h2 v19042.928. At first I thought AMD drivers were broken again, but a friend and now the original poster are using Intel CPU and NVIDIA GPU. I’m relieved my build is only a few months old. We share the same Windows versions – Windows 10 20h2 v19042.928 – “fuck these updates again.” If you’re using the same version, don’t reinstall. I’m planning to try a Windows 10 2004 ISO right now and will update you when I can. Good luck!

I currently use Task Manager to end dwm.exe. A warning appears asking if closing it might restart the computer, offering two choices: "shutdown" or "cancel." Selecting shutdown lets the program close without fully powering off, and the process ends as expected before restarting correctly. This happens occasionally, but it gets me back online quickly without losing any progress.

Using an Intel integrated graphics card has been flagged since mid-2020 due to issues linked with faulty drivers. This problem has been documented repeatedly, yet Intel has shown little concern and hasn’t prioritized a fix. It appears to conflict with recent Windows 10 updates from version 20h1 or later. A possible solution involves downgrading your Intel drivers to a compatible version (≤ 27.20.100.8476) and disabling automatic Windows updates to prevent further complications.

I'm having the same issue too, but luckily for me I just need to restart my pc. I'm searching for solutions because I'm lazy to restart, but it seems that no one has the answer yet. In my opinion Microsoft should talk about this issue because its a problems since 4 yrs ago, and I found this guy over on youtube that talks about it, but he only said a solution for pc users. Here's the title of the vid "Desktop Window Manager Eating up all the RAM FIX fast easy". Sorry it's only a title because I might get banned for sharing links in this forum.
