The problem started a couple of weeks back, where my system would take around ten minutes to shut down completely from the windows interface (fans and lights remained on). Recently, most applications would either refuse to launch or appear as empty windows. Opening Task Manager only showed a snapshot of when the task manager was launched, with no changes in performance or app behavior. Attempting to close it would freeze the task and then allow another corrupted instance to run next to it. Adjusting window settings led to just an empty window with the settings icon, with nothing loading. This issue doesn’t occur consistently, but when I can reach settings, everything seems normal—no warning lights in Device Manager either. Restarting causes it to hang and sometimes displays a blue screen indicating DRIVER POWER STATE FAILURE, though this isn’t always the case. Hardware behavior has also been odd, with fans spinning faster than usual at steady speed. Using Safe Mode via msconfig resolves the problem without any complications. I’ve already tried several troubleshooting steps: running SFC, DISM, reseating RAM, performing a Windows repair, and doing multiple clean installs of both Windows 10 and 11. The issue continues. My BIOS is current, and there are no problems in the BIOS or settings adjustments. System specs: Aorus x570i pro wifi, AMD 5600X, Gigabyte 5700XT, Crucial 16GB (2x8), WD sn850x Nzxt H1 (650W).
The troubleshooting team couldn't resolve the issue. After a single PC restart, it functioned properly enough for me to check Resource Monitor, revealing disk throttling. The case is quite old. There was a recall for them, and it’s linked to a fire hazard. A quick online search shows many people have swapped out the PSU in those systems. That seems like the first thing I’d think about. Do you have an extra PSU available for testing?
One sad computer is happening... Can you open the file explorer? Check the C:\Windows\Minidump folder. Use tools like BlueScreenView or WhoCrashed for the "Caused by Driver" section. Share those .dmp files, even if I can't read them—I hope someone else can help.
This setup lasted about two hours before I encountered issues after a fresh Windows 10 installation. Interestingly, I didn’t install any additional chipset or driver packages except AMD adrenaline. The minidump linked here appears right after the latest update cycle, which failed to install on October 14th. After rebooting, the PC lost its Ethernet connection even though network drivers were functioning properly; restarting again caused it to freeze and trigger a driver power state failure.
