System isn't updating performance as expected.
CPU model is i7-12700k, motherboard is Asus z690-a, RAM installed is Corsair Vengeance 32GB at 3600MHz, power supply uses Corsair rm850, GPU is Asus TUF 7900 XTX, cooler is H150i ELITE from CAPELLIX, and OS is Windows 11 with a fresh install yesterday. Graphics drivers are updated to version 23.7.1. The issue is that CPU clocks remain at base speed during idle or load, despite enabling BIOS settings like "rebar" and "XMP". I confirmed Turbo Boost Max 3.0 was active. Any further steps needed in the BIOS?
@Mr_Estonian Run ThrottleStop. Share the main window screenshots, along with the FIVR and TPL interfaces. This should clarify the turbo boost issue. Visit the Asus site and verify you have the most recent BIOS update.
@Mr_Estonian Ensure the Disable Turbo box is turned off on the main ThrottleStop display. Intel processors rely on turbo boost to achieve peak performance, so it must be activated. Verify your BIOS settings to confirm Intel Turbo Boost is active. Are you running the newest BIOS release? Such issues are often resolved by updating to the latest version. Your system has Undervolt Protection turned on, which can significantly reduce efficiency. Test Cinebench and compare your results with other machines having the same 12700K CPU. It’s advisable to disable Undervolt Protection in the BIOS if possible. UVP is a faulty setting that may halve performance. ThrottleStop won’t display Undervolt Protection in the FIVR window when this feature is disabled in the BIOS.
I removed the disabled turbo option. Enabled Intel Turbo Boost in BIOS. The Undervolt Protection isn’t listed in your BIOS—maybe a newer update is needed.
Perhaps not every BIOS version supports disabling Undervolt Protection. Consider running Cinebench to check your performance. How does your score stack up against others? UVP should only be disabled when it’s actually harming speed. It seems your BIOS isn’t configuring the CPU properly. Are you using the most recent BIOS update? These problems are typically resolved by the manufacturer. This might relate to a Windows 11 issue. You likely won’t need ThrottleStop for Turbo Boost activation. If you do, the cause appears to be either the BIOS or Windows 11.
Following the bios update, my clocks run at full capacity even when not in use. Is this the intended behavior?
@Mr_Estonian The Windows power settings determine if your CPU reduces performance when idle. Choose the Windows Balanced plan for a slower CPU during inactivity. Remember that Intel CPUs aim to reach full speed even with minimal workload. With many background processes, the CPU won’t slow down. Intel CPUs on Windows 11 operate faster today compared to previous years—this is beneficial. Activate core C states in the BIOS if power conservation matters for you.
