System halted due to error code AA following startup.
Hello everyone, I’m facing some problems with my PC and would value your assistance. Here’s what’s occurring: The system starts up fine with just one beep, but after POST it becomes stuck during boot attempts—Windows freezes at the splash screen and Ubuntu displays a black screen. The motherboard error stays fixed at code "AA." It also freezes when trying to boot from USB drives like Windows Bootable or Hiren’s Boot USB. Both the mouse and keyboard stop responding. BIOS temperature and power readings look normal.
Specs: CPU AMD ThreadRipper 3970X, Motherboard Gigabyte TRX40, 256GB RAM, 2x RTX 3090, PSU Corsair AX1600i.
What I’ve tried: Checked RAM one by one, re-seated GPUs, tested SSDs separately, updated BIOS to latest CMOS and reset it, verified PSU status. All seem OK.
No solution so far. Have others had similar issues? Any advice on next steps? Thanks!
The board remaining on a certain POST code after booting is typical, though the exact value may vary. AA is frequently used as an example. Even with a fully functional system, this could occur. Regarding why Windows doesn’t start, I’d assume the installation might be damaged or there’s a faulty SSD. Since you’re experiencing problems with USB drives, it could point to a motherboard issue. Consider downgrading the BIOS to an older version; newer updates sometimes have bugs. Also, re-seating the CPU might help—Threadripper is known for tricky mounting, and improper pressure can cause unexpected behavior.
Ronothan, I'll attempt to lower the BIOS settings and reposition the CPU, then let me know what happens. It's odd the system has worked well for years, yet this problem surfaced recently.
Hi everyone, I've run several additional checks, yet the problem continues. I used a different power supply unit, installed just one RAM stick and one GPU (since Threadripper lacks an integrated one). I reinserted the CPU and checked the socket—no bent pins detected. All RAM was removed and the system powered on; the motherboard showed code "10" without any beep, and the DRAM light stayed lit. I scanned the SSD and found no issues. When trying to boot from USB devices like Windows 11 and Hiren’s Boot again, the system still freezes with motherboard code "AA." I also entered Ubuntu recovery mode, but it became stuck and kept showing code "AA." Could you suggest any further steps? It's hard to identify the faulty part.
