Just to note, I found an old link about 32bit options because Ubuntu no longer supports it. If your system only has 256MB RAM, it could be quite restrictive. Try using the full memory if possible. Right now, a 32bit distro that supports swapping is your top pick—antiX seems easiest to get up and running. If you can't upgrade RAM, xubuntu 18.04.5 or Puppy Linux might work better. First step would be cleaning the hard drive before installing fresh. Cheers! Edited July 30, 2022 by TorC

2GB of RAM is more than sufficient for most contemporary Linux systems, though it might not handle multiple tasks smoothly—it will still start up.

I tried, but long story short I couldn't upload the file. But here's what I did as follows. - Opened Rufus 3.19 and imaged Ubuntu 17.04 to my E: drive (SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 128gb) - Ejected my E: drive from my main PC and put it into the old PC - Started the old PC and pressed F1 to continue booting - Takes a second or two, then I get "SYSLINUX 6.03 EDD 2014-10-06 Copyright © 1994-2014 H. Peter Anvin et al" - And it stays at that message

I possessed 2GB of RAM and 256GB of storage space. Regardless, I cleared the hard drive before beginning the setup to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Check if you can start from a damaged USB drive.

Sure, you can still use Rufus to write the file to a CD even if you don’t have one nearby. Just make sure your computer has the right drivers installed.

I doubt it, Windows 7 and 10 should work well with an ISO file.
