System freezing or hanging in a threadripper setup
Hello everyone, welcome! I’m just starting out with PC building and have a few other successful projects under my belt. Recently, I assembled an AMD Threadripper for YouTube gaming content creation. Below is a rundown of my setup and the issues I’m facing.
Components: CPU – Threadripper 1900x; Cooler – CoolerMaster ML360 TR4; Motherboard – Gigabyte Aorus Gaming Pro; RAM – Gigabyte AORUS PRO 32GB; CPU cooler – 32GB Hyper X Predator (HX430C15PB3K4/32); PSU – Thermaltake RGB Pro 750W; Storage – Samsung 970 EVO 250GB M.2 (for OS) and 1TB WD Blue (for bulk storage); GPU – Gigabyte RX Vega 56 OC; OS – Windows 10 Pro.
At first, the system seemed odd—brief lagging and slowdowns, then freezing during gameplay and recording with ReLive. The screen would freeze, mouse and keyboard stopped responding, sound issues appeared, and fans spiked. I had to force shut down manually. I suspected driver problems, updated drivers, ran a Windows update, restarted, but the problem persisted before loading any games.
I entered safe mode; it worked well for about two hours of YouTube videos and general use. A clean boot caused freezing again when I played a game. I tried a clean Windows install briefly, but the issue returned after launching a game.
Concerns include:
- The PSU only has an 8-pin connector, which might be limiting power delivery for these components.
- The system draws a lot of power, especially with the CPU and GPU.
- I’m unsure if a BIOS update is needed, though it seems confusing to me.
- My BIOS version (F1) may not support the latest features or stability.
I’m frustrated but trying to keep the PC running smoothly. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Is it possible to send a POST request? Would you like an alternative graphics card for testing, even if it's a simple bus-based one?
If the CMOS reset button isn't working, use the CMOS reset jumper instead. Make sure to disconnect the computer before resetting the CMOS.
After experimenting with the setup, I observed a few changes. 1. The Aorus logo on the lower right corner of the Mobo was using RGB backlighting. It would appear and stay visible when I powered it up, but now it only flashes once before disappearing when I switch the PSU power on. 2. The RGB ring on my PSU isn’t illuminating during startup as it did before. This might indicate a failing PSU.
You're wondering if your PC is overheating, especially since you've experienced system freezes at high temperatures. It's important to monitor the temperature to ensure proper performance.
