It all started with a crash while leaving Darktide. All my screens went dark, yet I could still hear my friend on Discord. I had to power down the system. This kind of issue usually occurs when launching a fullscreen game, especially after waking up. I have three monitors on my desk and an HDMI cable connected to a TV. When the computer starts up, all displays initially turn black for 10-20 seconds before one becomes active. In the Display settings, no other connections are detected. The Event Viewer logs errors and warnings related to dwm.exe exiting or failing. I needed to restart, return to the Display settings, and set each monitor to "Extend desktop to this display" since they were all marked for disconnection at startup. At the beginning, I had an MSI 3080; it sometimes worked with just three monitors connected, but usually failed completely if the TV was also on. I tried several fixes: updated chipset drivers, rolled back video drivers, updated power settings, re-flashed the GPU, replaced the GPU, and even used a different monitor. I borrowed my friend's 2060, which didn’t have the issue even with all displays connected. Eventually, I connected my 3080 to Micro Center because I suspected the GPU was the problem, but it still failed. I moved the GPU to another PCIE slot and tried again, but the issue persisted with my Ryzen 5 5600X.

I gathered my findings to assist others later. I own two 144hz 1440p monitors and one 60hz 1080p monitor. It began when I connected a new HDMI 2.1 cable to the TV for 120hz 4k HDR. With just SDR and 60hz settings, the issue didn’t occur. The 2060 only handled 4k/60 through its HDMI port, which explains why it didn’t work on that device. I don’t have a clear reason for the failure, but at least it keeps my computer stable. Thanks for reading.
