Recently my old Dell XPS 8900 with an Intel i7 6700 processor began showing errors about the motherboard fan not working. I opened it up and noticed all fans were spinning even though the error was displayed. The heatsink was damaged so removing the processor was difficult. I replaced the case, installed a Gigabyte H370 Aurus 3 motherboard, a new Intel i7 9700K processor, and a Thermaltake SMART 600W power supply. My friend and I moved the RAM (Corsair Vengeance LPX), GPU (Gigabyte GTX 960), and the old hard drive into the new build. We found the video input only worked when the HDMI cable was connected to the GPU. When we started the PC, it would freeze just before accessing the hard drive. In BIOS it recognized the drive but asked to pick a boot device and restart. The hard drive was fine before the XPS 8900 failed. We tried re-seating the CMOS battery and running the machine without the GPU as suggested by others who have built and fixed similar systems. The general opinion is there’s a conflict between the Windows 10 installation on the hard drive and the motherboard, and reinstalling Windows might resolve the issue. Are there any other steps you could try before completely replacing everything?
Performed a Windows installation on a flash drive or disk to repair the MBR and install it on the new machine. This was necessary during the transfer of my SSD from an older laptop to a newer one. Edited December 7, 2019 by GDRRiley
I understand. I truly wanted it to avoid that situation, and I value your feedback. Thank you.
