System failure during high demand PC malfunctions when under stress
I recently assembled a PC and just received my GPU via mail. When playing certain high-end games, the screen suddenly goes black, audio stops after a few seconds, then sound effects cut out shortly after. While my fans run at full speed, I never see any display until I restart the system. This issue appeared in two consistent situations: using the newest Minecraft version with the "Rethinking Voxels" shader enabled at high settings, and playing Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice with all high options and raytracing set to maximum. I run my games at native resolution for a monitor sized 1680x1050, aiming for 60 frames per second. My PC configuration includes Windows 10 Home 64-bit (unactivated) on an ASUS B650-Prime with the latest BIOS, an AMD Ryzen 5 7600 stock processor, a 4x8GB CPU cooler, 4800MHZ RAM, an RTX 3080 (HP OEM secondhand), a 2TB NVMe SSD, a WD Blue 1TB SATA SSD, a TP-Link Wifi card, and a set of fans (two intake, one exhaust). I know lowering graphics settings would help, but I was hoping for better performance from the 3080. Please advise if anyone has insights on resolving this problem.
Consider unplugging and plugging back your GPU into the power cord, ensuring you have the newest drivers installed. Check whether the problem persists when you reduce graphics settings—this might indicate an issue with the GPU itself rather than a software glitch. If the issue remains unresolved, return it for replacement if you have warranty coverage. It doesn’t appear the PC is crashing, so try connecting your monitor directly to the motherboard and verify it appears in Windows Desktop. Edited July 17, 2023 by WackySpace
I just wanted to note this update. The PC screen still turns black with the same issue and symptoms as before. I’ve run stress tests on the system, but it works fine in both the Heaven benchmark and some Blender renders I tried. Still, why does it crash in games with very high settings remains unclear. Fortunately, the problem disappears when I lower my settings in Hellblade, and I’ve switched to a different shader in Minecraft.
