Hey, I see the issue with your HP Proliant DL580 G5. It seems like the internal components are powering on but not turning on properly. The SPI board lights up green, and the iLo POST LEDs show "00," but there’s no fan activity or any fans spinning. Also, the PSU1 and PSU2 aren’t lighting up even though they’re connected.
You haven’t tested the additional power supplies yet. I assume the DL380 G5 needs at least two devices connected. What processors are currently installed, and how many? For RAM, what amount do you have, and where is it placed in the slots? This server is quite old, slow, and uses a lot of power. What are your plans for it?
G5 is outdated, possibly even from before 2010. I installed G6 in 2008. The error code 00 indicates the setup chip selects are needed. It seems the microswitches are for configuring the chipset, CPU, and memory. Refer to the instructions on the case lid for guidance.
Typically, a missing post code indicates the CPU is non-functional or unrecognized.
G5 was released in 2007. The top CPU this server supports is the X7460, essentially a Core 2 Quad with an extra core. I truly wish the OP received this for free, and that it has ample memory. Otherwise, its main value seems to be producing heat or preventing a boat from drifting away.
The CPU included with the purchase is actually four of them. There are also four power supplies, and I attempted to use just two of them. All four CPUs were installed successfully. The RAM slots are fully occupied, suggesting a total capacity of around 144 GB. Honestly, I don’t know what to do with the old unit. I received another HP Proliant DL580 G7 and a Fujitsu Primergy TX300 S6 for a combined cost of 90€.
That's not bad for the G7 and Fujitsu! They're at least Nehalem, so you can use relatively inexpensive server DDR3. I wouldn't put any more effort into the DL580 Gen5. Think of it as a "here, you throw this away". Save the drives and any interesting PCIe cards, toss the chassis. You might be able to eBay the RAM; someone might want the ECC DDR2 FB-DIMMs.
I looked at the cover and saw that if the power supply LED isn’t lighting, it means there’s no AC power reaching the device. After checking the voltage on the other side, I found only 12V. All the other connections didn’t respond? It could be that a fuse inside the PSU blew. I’m going to check it (I’m an electrician, don’t worry).
these are glass fuses, but if they get fried... it could mean more will be affected. And if that happens, it might make a solid dock for your next boat.
