I’m close to getting this build functional again. I actually managed it once before, but I’m now confused. I’m upgrading my graphics card from a GTX 730 to an XFX Radeon RX 5500 XT. The power supply is an EVGA 500W, and I need to connect the 5500 using a Thermaltake riser cable. I’m running Windows 10 on an M.2 drive without any screws, and I’ll try to simplify what happened so far.

Initially, when I installed the new card, it would freeze and then crash. Switching between the old and new cards a few times forced me to reinstall Windows. Eventually, after some adjustments, the freezing stopped and I could use the 5500 without issues for a short time.

Then I attempted to install the AMD drivers, but every version I tried returned with error 182, claiming incompatibility. Looking it up, the fix was to uninstall the old graphics drivers first. Using DDU (Display driver uninstaller) helped, but booting into safe mode still froze the system. Restarting after removing the 730 worked, and I could boot back in without problems.

I tried system repair and restoring from a restore point, but Windows wouldn’t let me reinstall via the cloud download. A fresh install would be a waste of time. I managed to boot into BIOS and MGR before freezing, but nothing related to Windows.

I’m pretty sure the card works, as I was able to use it for a few hours without the AMD drivers. Still, I’m stuck on the next steps. Thanks for your help.

Might the problem stem from outdated hardware struggling to integrate with modern components? Intel 6700k: "Sept 1, 2015 (released) Sept 27, 2015 (introduced)"

It functioned, though I'm struggling to understand. It seems like something might have gone wrong somewhere. I think it could be a Windows issue, but I'm not sure.

Have you considered skipping the riser cable or starting with a new Windows 11 setup?

Unfortunately I can't test without the riser because I'm a dum dum and didn't measure space before purchasing the card. I haven't tried Windows 11 either, though I'm not sure if I should wait—since it's an unsupported motherboard model (missing that chip feature).

To remove the Nvidia drivers, use DDU without needing to enter safemode. It functions properly outside safemode during uninstall and restart steps. When reinstalling the 5500XT, obtain drivers via Windows Update or install them manually rather than relying on adrenaline. Ensure your BIOS and Windows are current. Your 6700k is still compatible with the 5500XT unless another factor is causing issues. The problem likely lies with the riser cable, particularly if it's outdated or paired with a newer card or older board. Your motherboard must match the riser cable's PCIe generation.

AMD hasn't fully resolved the issue yet; their drivers still have stability concerns. Some users experience no problems, while others face significant issues. Remove all video drivers from your system and try installing the AMD drivers via Microsoft's Windows Update. Test this approach to determine if it resolves any conflicts. Standard Windows drivers function properly, but the AMD driver remains faulty. This indicates your hardware is functional, but the driver software has defects.

I tried to install the 730 drive, restarted it, but then faced a blue screen. It seems Windows is still having issues, possibly due to registry errors. Now I’ve messed up the drive during a Windows reinstall from an installation CD, and even though it’s on an SSD, it isn’t being recognized by the boot manager or BIOS. I’m planning to try a reset next.
