I'm using a Rampage VI Extreme with an i7-7820x processor. I recently installed a Crucial PCIE 4.0 M.2 drive, and I already have an old Samsung 960 as my boot device. I thought I'd try using the DIMM.2 slot on my motherboard for extra storage. But my computer isn't recognizing the new drive at all. Everything else seems normal, the LED on the PCIe slot is lit, but the drive doesn't appear. My assumption was related to the PCIe lanes—my CPU has 28 lanes and I have a 3090 (PCIe 4) and a Gen3 M.2 device. Adding this Gen4 drive might mean I'm running out of lanes. However, that doesn't fit because I've used a 3090 and a 1080 with the same PC before, so it should still work, just slower. Another possibility is that the new drive itself is the issue. I could test by inserting it into the main M.2 slot, but that would be difficult. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The DIMM.2 slot is automatically active and appears to remain so. There don’t seem to be any settings to turn it off except for VROC. I understand that 28 lane CPUs are restricted to a specific side of the DIMM.2 module, and while it was placed incorrectly at first, I fixed that too. Open computer management, locate the disk, and format it as needed.
You can't view the new drive in the BIOS, yet other drives appear there. That suggests the new drive isn't functioning. Try connecting it to another machine or visit the retailer where you purchased it, have them install it and verify its operation before proceeding. Also, ensure the PCI connections on the board are working properly.
