Hello everyone, I'm really unsure what to do now. When I first set up my PC a few days ago, it wouldn't boot at all. The fans only spun for a couple of seconds, sometimes just one second. I assumed the issue was with the memory, so I replaced it. But nothing changed. Then I checked the power supply and voltages with a multimeter—some of the 12V pins were showing only 10.9V. So I bought a new PSU from a nearby store. Still nothing resolved. Now I'm left wondering about the CPU. I didn't overclock it, and it's only been two and a half years since installation. I didn't see any damage during my inspection, but I'm not sure why it would fail. My guess is it might be an internal problem with the CPU, or maybe something else is affecting it. I thought about taking pictures of both the CPU and its socket for reference. Thanks for your help!
Yes, I faced the same issue before. The Z390 uses the same 1151 port, but it doesn't specify whether the 6th and 7th generation CPUs use version 1 or 2.
Ah ok. I forgot to mention that I previuosly had an MSI Z270 A pro where the problem ocurred in the first place. The Z390 is the new MB I bought. So I will change asap to my old board again. Just to clarify. The 390 detects the v1 CPU and immediately shuts down?
I attempted to use a 6700k in a Z390 Aorus Pro Wi-Fi. It kept switching on and off repeatedly until I cut power. Earlier I shared my experience and received info about CPU support. It seems pin configurations changed between the 6th/7th and 8th/9th generation 1151 chips, though it’s unclear what exactly happened. Interestingly, you mentioned trouble with a Z270 board—though the 6700k works fine on a Z170 I own as my home server, and the 8700k, 8086k, and 9900k all functioned properly in their Z390 setups.
They never collaborated on this project. I’ll change to my previous setup today and share the results. I’m avoiding any hacking—I just need a functional system. I only purchased this because I initially believed the Z270A was faulty, and with the Z390 it seemed similar. Although I should mention that after leaving it with the old PSU, MOBO, and later starting it, I accessed the BIOS by chance. But overall, the situation felt quite random. Based on what I see, the Z390 appears to be experiencing issues too.
Looks like contacts are fine, no bent pins visible on the socket even though anything could happen. I’d attempt to reinstall the Z270 and CPU. If a faulty PSU is suspected, do you have a backup? Consider removing everything from the case and using some cardboard as a temporary base since replacements will likely be swapped soon.
