It's surprising how things turned out. I didn't think of that connection... but swapping the DIMM spots from 2,4 to 1,3 actually fixed it.
This post really helped me after a long time. My ga-h97m-d3h matx board had the same problem with RAM mismatch over 16GB not booting. After swapping the 2,4 to 1,3 and vice versa, it worked right away.
