Hello, Your Intel i5-9400F CPU temperature appears as zero degrees Celsius both in the package and on individual cores when using HW Monitor, Intel XTU, Aida64, etc. However, the BIOS displays -10°C (minus ten degrees). The temperature sensor isn’t picking up any heat, yet fan speed remains unchanged even under load. Sometimes the fan completely stops working regardless of CPU activity. When the fan is active, it spins around at about 1050 RPM. This leads to a blue screen warning saying your PC encountered an issue and needs to restart, which then causes shutdown. I believe this occurs because the system can’t detect the CPU temperature properly. After replacing the motherboard, I suspected it was faulty, but with a brand new board the problem continues. It’s only been about a week since I assembled this PC. Is your processor defective?

Config: i5 9400F, Gigabyte B365M DS3H motherboard, Antec VP600P PSU, MSI, Nvidia GTX 1660 Super graphics card, ADATA 8GB DDR4 2666x2

It's possible a pin might be dirty or bent, causing incorrect information display.

Inspected the connectors on the board. All appears to be okay. A brand new board didn’t fix the issue either.

Start by updating the bios and seeing if it makes a difference. For the BSOD, don’t swap out the motherboard—just make sure the PSU is properly connected. This 600W unit is pretty powerful, so if you have another one, test it out.

What Windows version are you operating on? Are you using any virtual machine software? The newest Windows 10 Insider Preview includes a capability to run Linux inside a VM, which is enabled automatically even when unused. This setting prevents certain monitoring tools from accessing direct CPU data like temperature sensors. It’s highly unlikely your CPU would have multiple core sensors or the package temp sensor damaged at the same time. Share a screenshot of CPU-Z if you need confirmation. Is this a standard retail processor or an engineering sample?

Running on Windows 10 Pro, version 1900, build 18363.836, the processor is a retail product.

Your 9400F is a retail processor. It's unusual for Intel to send a chip with all temperature sensors malfunctioning. I've noticed some ES pre-production models with faulty sensors, but not this widespread issue. What antivirus software are you running? Look for virtual machine or sandbox capabilities. Avast’s paid version includes a sandbox that could prevent sensor data from being accessed. In CPU-Z, open the About tab and press the Save Report (.TXT) button. You can attach the report to your next post. I’ll check the temperature register details. Here’s a typical example: MSR 0x0000019C 0x00000000 0x88340800

I'm using Bitdefender, but before installing it the system didn't show temperature. When a BSOD occurred, I wasn't aware of this problem. I began examining everything. Then I realized the CPU fan would sometimes shut off even when CPU was at 100%. Its speed stayed nearly constant, hovering between 1040 and 1060 RPM. I checked the CPU temperature, which displayed zero. This led me to think the CPU fan wasn't working properly because it couldn't detect heat. I also looked in the BIOS (attached file) and found the temperature reading as -10. I suspected my motherboard might be faulty. Replacing it didn't resolve the issue, so aside from the processor, no other component seems to be causing this. The PFA report generated from CPUID DESKTOP-9RNV5PT.txt was noted.
