Hello everyone. I recently purchased an XFX Radeon RX 7900 XTX MERC310. After swapping the graphics card, I performed a fresh Windows 11 installation (all drivers are current). The issue is that roughly half of my installed games stop working after lunch: 1. Horizon Zero Dawn (Steam) – seconds after saving or launching a new game 2. Dead Space Remake (Steam) – seconds after lunch while shaders load 3. Total War: Warhammer 3 (Steam) – over 30 minutes of playtime 4. Last of Us Part 1 (Steam) – right after opening the main menu, shaders begin loading 5. 3DMark – crashes during Time Spy benchmarking On the other hand, some titles run perfectly: 1. Dying Light 2 (Steam) – no problems at any time 2. Dead Island 2 (Epic Games) – smooth performance 3. Kingdom Come Deliverance – flawless operation 4. Furmark – I can stress test the card for unlimited time without errors Overall, my PC functions normally otherwise. Crashes appear only when launching demanding apps. The system remains stable during web browsing, movie watching, or using low-GPU programs like Fusion 360 or AutoCAD. I've tried several fixes: 1. Multiple clean reinstalls of Windows 10/11 2. Latest drivers from manufacturers 3. Using only Windows drivers where possible 4. Switching to another M.2 slot on the motherboard 5. Changing NVMe drive to another SSD 6. Stress testing CPU and GPU – no errors 7. RAM tested with Memtest86 – no issues 8. Running CHKDSK /r /f – no bad sectors 9. Disabling BIOS OC settings 10. Resetting CMOS and applying default settings in BIOS 11. Turning off Secure Boot 12. Removing bloatware after a clean install 13. Deactivating AMD and Steam overlays 14. Turning off all AMD features in AMD Adrenalin 15. Lowering GPU clock speed 16. Switching to a secondary GPU BIOS 17. Upgrading or downgrading the motherboard BIOS 18. Disabling/enabling Secure Boot 19. Removing any unnecessary software after the Windows update My specs are: CPU i9-13900K (cooled, never above 85°C), GPU XFX Radeon RX 7900 XTX MERC310 (no heat issues; can stress test as needed), Motherboard ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS, RAM Kingston FURY KF564C32RSK2-32, SSD Samsung 2TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 NVMe 980 PRO (new firmware applied), Power Supply Gigabyte P1000GM 1000W 80 Plus Gold (previous issues resolved), and I’m using web browsing, streaming, and low-demand apps without problems. Hi there, nice RIG, hopefully we here can help you. The RX7900 seems to sometimes have issues with hardware. In this instance I think it is the PSU, there have been others with 7900's where the PSU, even new one's were the fault. So if you could get another to test with it might solve the issue. I think 85% chance it is the PSU.
Hi Trinity-W., Are you certain it's PSU? I've tested Furmark or Prime95 for over an hour without any problems. I own a WiFi power adapter with power draw stats, and it never exceeded 600W across the whole system. I don't think a 1000W unit would be too much...
Hi, I don't think it's too weak; different hardware setups can sometimes conflict. In other instances, the issue turned out to be a PSU problem, even though the new PSU was fresh. They resolved it by switching the power supply. Based on what you shared, MOBO could be the culprit in a small number of cases. You mentioned it's possible that software conflicts might lead to crashes—feel free to confirm if it's PSU70% or MOBO30%. If you could test the hardware with another PSU and then with MOBO, it would really aid in diagnosing the issue. Have you tried this approach before? It’s something quite random to attempt, but if it helps, that would be great! I also noticed something I hadn’t thought of: I turned off Core Performance Boost in the BIOS of my motherboard. If your MOBO doesn’t have this setting, it probably won’t matter.
I have my previous PSU – keep it quiet! It's a straightforward 11-platinum power supply with 850W capacity. I plan to run it tomorrow and share my impressions. I don't have another motherboard to test, but I'm sure the PSU isn't the problem here. Furmark and Prime95 put the GPU/CPU under heavy load beyond normal use. If the PSU can handle those stress tests, it should perform well in general.
Thanks for the response. It seems the issue might be related to faulty drivers. I've checked WHQL, updated the latest versions from Asus and AMD (Radeon), and even used Windows Update drivers. In theory, everything is 100% certified. Still no success. The weird part is that the "Crashing-to-desktop" happens only in certain apps, especially those with heavy GPU usage.
I checked the other PSU I talked about. Everything remains the same—same games, identical issues.
