Hey there, I'm struggling here. I own an old setup for my HTPC—i5 750, H55N-USB3, HD5770. Suddenly it freezes without warning, dropping into an audio loop and freezing the screen too. It doesn't react to power buttons, reset, or keyboard input. Only turning off the power supply works. I've reinstalled the OS and swapped USB dongles, but nothing helps. I just began a MemTest and it's still clean so far. No GPU glitches or freezing with OCCT; CPU passed Intel tests, SSD smart test passed.
CPU operates around 55-60, GPU performance is 60-70. No visible indicators for RAM usage or VRM status.
The rig seems to be outdated. Are there any planned replacements? It looks like it might be related to hardware issues—something that works when things are cool but fails once they heat up. I’m curious if opening the side panel and directing a fan across the open area could help. Near the top tier i7, there’s a significant chip for an h series board.
It seems like this setup is quite old. My main thought is there’s a board component that’s not visible and decided to end its life in a dignified way. No caps appear to be damaged. Nothing looks like it’s shorted, and there’s no burning odor. There’s adequate airflow through the chassis, so temperatures shouldn’t spike too high. The i5 750 is a supported CPU on this board, functioning well before it began to struggle. The BIOS is up to date, with the latest version being F5 - bios v2, which enabled CPU support. It will still run Windows 10 and play videos for 5 to 80 minutes before it crashes. Below are some photos of the setup. The GPU has passive cooling from the bottom fan, which helps maintain stable temperatures during video playback. It doesn’t perform well in games. I swapped the PSU fan so it now acts as an intake; I thought maybe the original PSU was overheating, but that didn’t fix the issue.
Is there a lot of air being pushed around in there? Just taking off a side panel doesn’t necessarily improve cooling. It’s possible it’s not related to overheating. How long has the power supply been there?
I also added another fan to the side just to give it a bit more airflow. It's an FT03-Mini, so I can build it without any panels at all. I haven't had time to test it after swapping out the GPU, etc., which means I can't share a solid update right now. The PSU seems to be almost as old as the whole setup—maybe around 2013?
