System crashes during minimal usage or idle state BSOD appears under light load conditions
My computer frequently stops and shows error messages under light use, but not during heavy tasks like gaming. It doesn’t occur when connected to a monitor (its 49" 3840x1080 display might cause enough strain). Details:
Model: MSI GS66 Stealth 10SE 019fr (purchased in 2020)
Processor: Intel i7-10750H with RTX 2060
RAM: 16GB (2x8GB at 2666MHz)
OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (installed 07/06/2022)
I upgraded RAM from 16GB to 32GB, but the problem remains. I also moved to a faster 32GB kit, yet it doesn’t fix it.
BSOD clues:
- Stop code: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
- Affected file: nvlddmkm.sys
- Error number: 0x50…
Crash seems random; sometimes after opening just Chrome or Discord, other times it lasts hours.
Tests didn’t help:
- CPU and GPU stress tests (Cinebench, Furmark) stayed stable
- Memory test with MemTest64 always triggered a crash
- Analysis files suggest memory issues
- I replaced RAM sticks but the issue continued
- I adjusted voltage and heat settings without success
- Disabled/restarted XTU without improvement
- BIOS hasn’t been updated in years
Other actions tried:
- Windows update, drivers, GeForce Experience, clean installs
- Factory reset worked briefly before returning
- Battery level warnings didn’t stop crashes
- Fans cleaned, cooling system intact
- No visible damage or dust
My guess is still hardware-related—possibly memory or a failing component. I’m worried about damaging it and considered a technician visit, but the timing makes it hard to pinpoint.
If you need more specifics, feel free to share logs or screenshots. Good luck!
The issue was actually related to HWINFO. I managed to run MemTest64 for about an hour and a half without any problems, and kept it running for five hours straight. Thanks for the guidance! Can you find a way to keep the app operational without crashing your PC? Perhaps updating to an older version or adjusting some settings? (The app is already up to date.) I use it in my Rainmeter skins to quickly display temperatures in the taskbar and to monitor my laptop stats. Also, any reason why it crashes when used independently but not connected to a screen? Rainmeter settings: In "Driver Management" the driver is installed, but "persistent driver" isn't selected. I'm using the free version.
