System crashes during driver update and graphics rendering issues appear.
Hello, a few days back my monitor began showing artifacts (attached images) and quickly transitioned into a BSOD. Initially it displayed Stop Code: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE, but later changed to Stop Code: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. Despite this, the nvlddmkm.sys file remains present on both systems. My graphics card isn’t visible in HWMonitor or during stable testing sessions to collect the dump files, yet the artifacts continue while using the machine. Here are the attached files.
System Specifications (per your instructions)
OS/Original: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (bought from a store) x86: x64, ~3 years old
OS Installation Date: 4/21/2021
CPU Model: Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: MSI Gaming X Trio RTX 2080
Motherboard: GIGABYTE X570 GAMING X
Power Supply: EVGA Supernova 550 G3 80+ Gold
Storage: Crucial P1 1TB NVMe M.2 (boot drive), WD Blue 1TB, Samsung 500GB SSD (model unknown)
What I’ve attempted:
- Reinstalled drivers via Device Manager & GeForce Experience (triggered BSOD)
- Clean driver reinstall including DDU before installation (still caused BSOD)
- Re-seated GPU, power cables, and HDMI/DisplayPort connections (no improvement)
- Ran system without mixed memory sticks (unchanged)
- Performed chkdsk and sfc /scannow on all drives (no issues)
- Ran DISM Restorehealth (no changes)
Please let me know if you need more details. Your support would mean a lot. Thanks ahead!
This result isn't ideal for you. Did you receive the card or did you purchase a new one? GPU artifacts are uncommon in GPUs under five years old. Have you replaced the pasteboard or made any changes to the GPU? Try testing it in a different PCIe slot; if nothing improves, consider using another PC if possible. GPU artifacts are a warning sign, often indicating that the GPU's VRAM is failing. Not always, but usually.
I purchased the card used lightly from eBay. I tried it in another PCIe slot but it didn’t work. I’ll do my best to have it tested on another system soon, though it’s unlikely I can secure another one in the next few days. I’ll take care of it as soon as possible. Let me know if there’s anything else required.
Minor wear. The owner likely changed the paste and didn’t reassemble it properly, which might lead to artifacts. You could attempt to remove the backplate and cooler, then reattach them securely.
Apologies for the confusion, I bought this item about three years ago and it’s now experiencing problems. I’m not trying to shift blame, just looking for more details. I plan to remove the backplate and cooler, and if the issues continue, what should I do next? I’m worried about support from MSI or NVIDIA since I purchased it second-hand, and it’s likely past warranty. Probably removing the warranty sticker would also take me out of their support program. Thanks for your guidance, Edited December 5, 2022 by Funder Revised sentence about the purchase context.
I’m sorry, but I can’t repeat the same message. I wanted to share more details before taking irreversible actions. My earlier note was about a problem I noticed three years ago with the card, which is now causing issues. I’m not trying to avoid responsibility, just providing clearer information. I plan to remove the backplate and cooler, and if the issues continue, what should I do next? I’m concerned about support from MSI or NVIDIA since I bought it second-hand, and it’s likely past warranty. Probably removing the backplate and warranty sticker would also end my support options. Thanks for your guidance!
Hardware slightly baked on eBay... Not unexpected. If you plan to remove the heatsink and fans, thermal paste is essential for reapplication. I recommend silver thermal paste—it delivers better results than the savings you might expect. Watch tutorial videos on applying it; this process isn’t easy, so make sure you cover the surface thoroughly without letting paste spill onto the board. With this setup, it’s not like CPUs where progress is visible. I hope you succeed.
