Hey, I need some help with my setup. My motherboard and CPU are failing (probably just one of them, but my friend doesn’t have the parts to test), so I’m thinking about switching from LGA1200 (11700K) to LGA1700 (12700 non-K). I’m not planning to go overclock, just upgrade for gaming and browsing. I have an RTX 3080 Ti and 32GB of 3200MHz CL18 DDR4 RAM. Since RAM is costly right now, I’m looking for a LGA1700 board that supports DDR4. The only options I found (in stock and Australia) are the mATX H610 series, like the Gigabyte H610M gaming WiFi DDR4. I’m wondering if I’ll run into CPU power problems with this combination, especially since the VRM is low and I’m not overclocking. Also, I have two Samsung EVO 970 NVMe M.2 SSDs; the listing says the board has two PCIe slots but I’m unsure about the difference between PCIe and NVMe. Is that a problem?
I also have a lot of RGB fans (around six), and I’m not too concerned about them anymore, but I want to make sure they’ll fit. Lastly, any general tips would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time!
This combination remains a strong choice. Unfortunately, I can't suggest anything since the upgrade doesn’t seem worthwhile at the moment. Your existing setup is solid for now and will likely serve you well in the future.
The board looks good for me, works well with the 12700 CPU. You might want a contact frame since there are affordable options. It features two M.2 slots for your SSDs, though the second only supports PCIe 3.0 x2 rather than x4. You probably won’t notice much difference using the x2 slot, but an x4 NVMe M.2 will be limited to 1970 MB/s while an x4 x3 will hit 3940 MB/s. I see two fan headers and two ARGB Gen2 LED strip headers—remember there are different RGB standards, so double-check. Why is this mid-range board considered the best you can find? This project has been around for a while, but it really needs some upgrades. You’ll need a fan hub to keep things running smoothly. Check out used boards if you’re not looking to rebuild the whole system—many people sell pre-built ones without RAM or GPUs. If you want better performance, consider an AM4 or DDR4 LGA 1700 board. For LGA 1700 enthusiasts, that’s the way to go.
I wouldn't choose the H610 chipset, opt for the B760 instead. The B610 is typically suited for budget CPUs like I-3 or I-5. The B760 offers better performance overall, particularly for gaming. It has stronger VRM, more RAM slots, additional PCIe lanes, and more. The Z790 chipset would be ideal, but finding DDR4 boards is difficult and expensive compared to it. Buying from eBay is an option since many options exist, though always be cautious. Think about getting a K processor—they tend to perform better than non-K models. Sorry, I overlooked the part about the motherboard and CPU being faulty. Avoid using an H series chipset—it's just basic. For a better option, check the used market if you're having trouble finding something new. I’d choose a Z series motherboard for top CPUs like the 12700K.
The chances your CPU is malfunctioning are around 5%. More often than not, motherboards fail before CPUs. Look for a refurbished LGA 1200 board on eBay.
