Hello, I'm setting up a PC for a friend and downloaded an unofficial Windows installer. They want to upgrade to Windows 10. Can a CD key for Windows 10 be used?

I would reinstall it and type in the new key. The choice is yours—whether to share details with Microsoft or a doggy friend.

It should, though a fresh setup would be better. I wouldn't set up more than seven just for personal reasons. I don't rely on overwriting an active OS during boot, as it often causes issues. A clean installation ensures the new CD key will definitely function.
