Hey everyone, I’m thinking about upgrading my motherboard next month—do I still need Windows?

Reject this request. Just re-enter the key without needing Windows.

The issue is that I didn’t buy the retail version and instead received a cheaper one for $20. Still, do you really need it?

I purchased it from a reliable source, and it should function perfectly.

Unless it's an original equipment manufacturer, it tends to be more affordable and compatible with a single motherboard. You might try using your previous key and installation technique (CD/USB). If that fails, consider getting a fresh Windows installation.

You acquired your own machine and bought a system builder or OEM Windows license, which is marginally more affordable than the standard retail version. That OEM license is designed to link to the very first device you install it on, particularly the specific motherboard.
