I received my 14700k back and got the payment I expected, so I chose to switch to AMD. I’m planning to upgrade to a 9950x3d or 11950x3d model in 2027. If it weren’t for the DDR4 RAM, I might have stayed with the 14700k because it works well overall. However, I noticed that newer titles run about 15% slower on DDR4 compared to DDR5 with a 7200 MHz RAM. This could mean a performance drop of around 20% when switching to a 1080p setting in games. On the other hand, if my setup isn’t hitting 140fps, I might lower the resolution to 1080p for smoother play. For desktop tasks, the 14700k handles everything quickly—especially with my 4090 graphics card. Thanks everyone!

The key benefit of 3D v-cache lies in maintaining a consistent frame rate, particularly in multiplayer games or those interacting with servers. This typically results in significantly higher average frames due to the much higher minimum frame rates required. During my tests using a 7950x3D setup, switching from standard Zen4 to the 3D version provided a roughly 50% boost in performance for games like Diablo 4 and Warframe, especially under heavy player or enemy counts. These scenarios involved dense mob populations in towns and endurance missions. This approach is a strong upgrade and should be worth trying. Just note that adding silicon spacers to the chip increases its temperature by about 20°C compared to regular Ryzen 7000 models—normal for the performance gain.

If you receive your full refund, I’d certainly take it. The 7800X3D offers better performance for gaming, higher efficiency, and supports future upgrades.

all am5 chipsets aren't limited to x670e, what board are you checking and what requirements matter? likely a b650e taichi lite or b650 proart would suit you well if you need top performance plus ECL overclocking for x3d or dual GPUs/extra cards that can use the extra PCIe lanes. If you're just going all out without a reason, a 150$ b650 pg lightning might work better and it's still quite overbuilt and excessive for its price (still plenty of USB-A and lots of VRMs).

At 4K it seems you're fully dependent on the GPU, so no noticeable improvement in average frames, though possibly slight gains in lower resolutions... In my opinion, it's mostly a waste of money—you could have waited about six months for a 9800X3D.

It was a smart decision considering the risk of the CPU failing early, and they managed to recoup their investment. Delaying further might have meant losing the opportunity entirely or spending six months without a working PC.

CPU refund: 440 euros.
Additional cost estimate: 545 euros for CPU, MB, RAM.
Selling old Z690 M.2 and DDR4 RAM.
Expected return: ~200 euros.
Total expected cost: 345 euros.

Likely missed the return memo details, sorry! It makes sense that a RAM upgrade will be needed soon.

I chose to go all-in because AM5 support will last a long time, so I wanted solid VRMs and specs for the board (perhaps later we'll add more cores with CCDs or even two CCDs plus a 3DCache). I got an Asus Prime Z670E-Pro (14+2), I don’t like MSI BIOSes and there were no comparable options from Gigabyte at the time. This card should perform well with the best CPU from AM5’s end of life. If 9800X3D or 9950X3D don’t improve much over the 7800X3D, I’ll wait for the 11K series upgrade. I hope to have a 16-core in the future; the 7800X3D is just a placeholder while I mostly play around. Sometimes I need a VM, but the 8-core/16-core from the 7800X3D should cover my needs.

545 euro for MB and RAM? That’s about 250. The Asrock b650m livemixer includes 14 + 2 + 1 VRM, making it suitable for most CPUs at half the price. For RAM, there are many options, but a 32GB 6000MHz CL30 should be around $100.
