Switching from RTX 3080 to RTX 3090 caused a drop in frames per second.
Hey everyone. I just switched from the Zotac RTX 3080 to the MSI RTX 3090 Super X and hoped for a performance increase of at least ten percent. COD WARZONE was supposed to help. Instead, my frame rate dropped. It went from 180 to 200 FPS on the RTX 3080 (after MSI afterburner) to 160 to 190 FPS on the RTX 3090 (also after MSI afterburner). The settings in the game are almost identical. I thought reinstalling drivers would fix it, and I updated my PCI type to Gen 4, changed the BIOS, and even updated my window settings. Still nothing works. My FPS is still lower than before using the RTX 3080. I ran benchmarks and the RTX 3090 scored higher by about 2000 points. The issue only appears when playing games. Also, my GPU usage is around 60 to 75 percent during COD WARZONE (with MSI RTX 3090). My current build includes an M.2 x570 Aorus motherboard, Ryzen 9 5900X, GTX 1060, and a 16GB NVMe SSD. I have a Toshiba PSU at 850W and a GSKILL Trident Z Neo 3600MHZ with 32GB RAM. Thanks for reading! I really need some guidance here. I’ve tried everything and nothing helped. Hope someone can assist me. Thanks!
Skeptical reasoning about boosting performance by paying a premium for marginal gains.
Utilize every available RAM slot to boost your FPS. (Hardware Unboxed video demonstrates this, but it’s too easy to skip checking.) 2) Verify your power settings in Windows 10—ensure nothing has altered. 3) Keep drivers up to date. (I’m stuck trying to install the newest version, it didn’t work, but you can attempt it.) 4) Increase your GPU fan speed to its highest setting and observe any FPS improvements. There’s a lot to experiment with. Share your results!
I say no reason then moves on to mention it's 10% faster. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it, and I don't think this relates to fixing the problem. For OP, is this the same situation or just slightly different? How are GPU and CPU usage looking (per core)? At those frame rates, I'd expect CPU limitations to be more of an issue than GPU. Upgrading the GPU probably won't help. You might want to run a consistent benchmark like timespy to see if performance really drops.
You need to read every post carefully, because taking parts out of context can change the meaning and give you chances to push your point. A small boost is barely noticeable, anything over 60 is quite manageable, and someone with a 1050 still has room to improve. You won’t gain anything just by increasing from 180FPS to 200FPS—it’s mostly a feeling effect. Your abilities in online games don’t automatically become stronger; you just need to keep improving. The OP can handle every game with a 3090 running at 10-20 FPS more than 100, which doesn’t matter. If he didn’t check the game stats, he wouldn’t even realize it. As I mentioned, jumping from 3080 to 3090 wasn’t a smart choice—it was just an expensive mistake with no real benefit.
I also upgraded because of work. It’s been performing well with my tasks. I notice a big change from 3080 to 3090 while working. However, in warzone it doesn’t seem like any improvements are coming, only FPS dropping. I just want to understand why the 3090 isn’t outperforming a 3080 Zotac Ampli-Holo Black. Thanks for your help.
