What kind of monitor are you using? Are you referring to a G-Sync compatible setup? For my reference, I mean a FreeSync display paired with an NVIDIA GPU—essentially a G-Sync light, though now NVIDIA supports it. With a FreeSync screen you could get an RX 5700 for great value versus a 2070. If not, I’ll suggest a solid 2070 or similar.

Turning off G-sync resolved the problem. I own a freeSync monitor, though I don’t recall its exact brand. It supports G-sync and runs at 144Hz, 1080p, 24-inch size. UserBenchmarks show 53% for games, 60% for desk work, 44% CPU usage on an Intel Core i7-3770. GPU performance is 65.9%, GPU usage 56%. SSD is Samsung 830 128GB at 64.6%, HDD is WD Green 1TB (2011) at 49.5%. RAM is Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 C9 4x4GB at 59%. MBD model is Asus P8Z77-V LX.

This option makes a great choice for a GPU upgrade right now. It matches the price range of the 2060 model but delivers better performance than the 2060 Super. Just make sure your current power supply can handle the increased power draw. What PSU model are you using currently? (For instance, "EVGA G2 550W" isn't enough information.)

It's worth mentioning I changed from a 670 to the 1060 roughly a year ago.

Thanks for the insightful image. It really helps clarify the PSU choice. @LukeSavenije I’m referencing the specs from my research. From what I see so far, I’m hesitant to recommend this model for GPUs above the current GTX 1060 with 6GB. It seems like a more affordable Cooler Master that’s likely from 4-5 years ago and might not meet modern efficiency standards like 80Plus. What are your thoughts?

Back then, if I had a 144Hz monitor I’d have suggested you’d need a stronger GPU to reach 1080p at 144 FPS. The 1060 works well for medium/high settings and around 75Hz for 1080p, but it struggles with much higher frames unless you lower the settings or play simple games like Rocket League.

I discovered more details about it—it's a ~2012 Cooler Master GX600 with 540W on the 12V, which probably indicates it's a groupreg unit. It's manufactured by ATNG, and I don't think it's safe to power a 1060 off it.

Previously I focused on Counter-Strike Source, using the PC mainly for creating community maps for CSS and some videos. Recently I’ve started playing again and am eager to try new games. If I’d known about the 1060 earlier, I might have chosen a different title. I purchased it used at a low price, which mainly boosted FPS performance.
