Switching from 3600XT/X370 to 5950X/B550
Hey there, I've been looking into this upgrade and would appreciate your thoughts. I'm moving from a 3600XT/X370 to a 5950X/B550, and I'm wondering if a fresh Windows install is necessary. You mentioned Windows 10 does a good job detecting hardware, and it seems that skipping the install isn't required. However, you should uninstall your display drivers before proceeding. I'd prefer not to reinstall Windows entirely but also don't want a system with issues. Do any of you have experience with this kind of upgrade, especially when combining a Windows reinstall with other steps? Your advice would be really helpful!
RN 12th gen Intel offers the better value, prompting AMD to likely lower prices soon. For gaming purposes, I suggest choosing the 12700K at $400 versus the 5950X’s $700, as UserBench indicates it runs faster. Passmark shows it performs less well due to fewer threads, affecting multithreaded tasks. Still, it provides 12 cores and 20 threads, making it suitable for video editing or streaming if those are your main activities.
Windows's hardware identification has improved significantly, yet occasional issues can still arise. For my primary system, I always reinstall after a CPU or motherboard change. On testing platforms, I don't worry much and only reinstall when problems appear, which has happened just once. If you're testing, reinstall only if needed; for a stable experience, a clean install is best.
Friends don't allow using Userbenchmark—it's a shaky, overly biased tool meant only for laughs (check their 11900k review for proof). Its scores don't make sense, even for simple tasks. I think the 12700k is likely the quicker option in single-threaded scenarios, but if you're after a 5950x, you probably just need the cores. In workloads where it shines, the 5950x really stands out.
I noticed some inconsistency due to limited sample size and a gaming-oriented benchmark. It makes sense when you compare it to the GTX 480 and even the R9 290. The 480 seems to perform better than the MX 450, right?
I was evaluating the upgrade from a 3600X to the 5950X, as the 3600X is better suited for gaming.
