Last month, my traditional Xbox controller began unexpectedly switching to the second player account. This issue appears specific to Rocket League, and over the last week it has progressed to a point where I’m unable to complete a single game without this occurring. The frustrating aspect is that the only solution I’ve found is to completely reboot my computer, rendering Rocket League unplayable. I have attempted removing the drivers, but that did not resolve the problem. Are there any other suggestions you can offer, or could you shed light on what might be causing this behavior?

Are there two Xbox controllers connected?
No, only one is plugged in. It functions as player 1 for a short period before unexpectedly switching to player 2. I hear a sound when I connect or disconnect anything, and it then defaults to player 2. A computer restart is the only way to revert it back to player 1.

Navigate to the Control Panel – Devices and Printers. You’ll see two controller options: “Xbox 360 Controller for Microsoft Controllers” and simply “Xbox 360 Wireless Controller.” Remove the initial option. Next, detach your controller labeled “Player Two.” Finally, reconnect it. Now, your controller will be configured as “Player One.”

Access the Control Panel by going to "Game Controllers" (on Vista/7, search for “Game Controllers” in the Start menu). Within this section, click "Advanced," choose your 360 Controller from the list, and confirm both selections. This should designate the 360 controller as “Primary.”

Subsequently, start your game, go to Settings, and change the "Player 1 Input" setting to utilize your 360 controller.

Navigate to the Control Panel -> Devices and Printers. You’ll see two controller entries: “Xbox 360 Controller for Microsoft Controllers” and simply “Xbox 360 Wireless Controller.” Remove the first option. Then, disconnect your controller labeled as “Player Two.” Finally, reconnect it. This should configure the controller as “Player One.”

Alternatively, go to Control Panel -> "Game Controllers" (On Vista/7, type “Game Controllers” into the Start Menu search). Click "Advanced," select your 360 Controller from the list, and press OK twice. This should designate it as “Primary.”

After that, launch the game, go to Options and change "Player 1 Input" to your 360 Controller.

I only noticed one controller listed in my Control Panel (on Windows 10). I’m uncertain how to assign the input to the initial controller in Rocket League.

I suspect I've identified the problem: I ran the “Troubleshoot this device” option in Control Panel, and it indicated an older device with potential USB 3 compatibility issues. I plugged the controller into a USB 2 port on my motherboard, and it appears to be functioning correctly so far. I’ve played for about five minutes without needing to switch controllers, and I'm hoping it remains stable.

Unfortunately, the connection only lasted for approximately ten minutes before it dropped out again. 😞

I only experienced the issue for approximately ten minutes before it changed again. 🙁

Hello, I’ve thoroughly searched for a solution after encountering the same difficulty.

Are you running Nvidia GeForce Experience on your computer? If so, and it’s active in the background while you're logged in, please close it. This program can sometimes incorrectly designate itself as Player 1 during operation due to its streaming capabilities.

This resolved the problem for me!

It’s puzzling that Nvidia or Microsoft doesn't clearly communicate this issue. 😉

Best regards

Hello, I'm experiencing the identical problem and GeForce Experience hasn’t been installed on my system. I’ve attempted numerous solutions found online, yet nothing has proven effective. Rebooting the computer alone provides a temporary fix. I’m running Windows 10, and my companion is facing the same difficulty with a separate Xbox 360 controller under Windows 7. Both of us utilize wired controllers – not wireless ones. It seems Microsoft has struggled to deliver reliable drivers for this particular issue since 2014, and it appears you may need to accept this as a persistent challenge.

Recently, my traditional Xbox controller began unexpectedly switching to the second player during gameplay, primarily in Rocket League. Over the last week, this issue has become so persistent that I can rarely complete a single match without it occurring. The frustrating aspect is that the only solution I’ve found involves restarting my entire computer, effectively rendering Rocket League unplayable. I've attempted removing the device drivers, but that didn’t resolve the issue. Could you suggest other troubleshooting steps or potential causes for this perplexing problem? It appears a faulty cable within the controller itself may be the source of the issue. 😉

Approximately a month ago, my physical Xbox controller began inexplicably switching to the second player during gameplay. This issue has become increasingly frequent over the last week, rendering Rocket League unplayable as I can no longer complete a single match without this recurring problem. Restarting my entire computer is the only workaround, which unfortunately makes Rocket League unplayable. I've attempted to remove the drivers, but that hasn't resolved the issue. Do you have any suggestions for alternative solutions or insights into what might be causing this?

Replacing the controller with a new one is suggested, but the cable isn't the source of the problem. Interestingly, the issue ceased after a recent Windows update, indicating that it was likely related to Windows itself.
