Switch to Z390 or upgrade X299?
You're weighing your options carefully. Right now you're using an ASUS ROG Rampage VI Extreme with an i9-7920X. You're considering two paths: either upgrade your motherboard to the Rampage VI Omega with a CPU and VRM waterblock, or go for an i9-9900K paired with the ROG Maximus XI Formula board and CPU waterblock. Since you mainly play games, you're not sure if you need more cores/threads for general tasks. You're thinking about sticking with the X299 for its higher core count or switching to a Z390 for higher clock speeds. It sounds like you want to avoid a big slowdown when running software or apps. There should be a noticeable difference between the two chips, but it depends on your specific workloads. Since your budget is similar, it might help to focus on what matters most—performance in gaming and daily use. What do you think?
9900K offers comparable results to the 7920X, just a bit less, but it gives better single-core performance. However, it doesn’t seem like it’s worth the investment unless you’re heavily affected by single-core tasks. I usually don’t upgrade unless I expect at least a two to three times boost. Right now I’m using my 5-year-old 5960X on a home rig and only got a 9900K because I needed an SFF setup while traveling. For a real jump, consider a Ryzen 3950X or a Threadripper.
