I purchased a 2.5G unmanaged switch for my LAN, but I’m not seeing speeds above 100 Mbps. Is this because my Verizon Fios router or am I doing something wrong with the TP-Link 8 port 2.5G TLS-GR? My network cards are 1Gb realtech.

The switch is a specific brand and model, while the network controller or card connected to the computer is identified by its make and model as well.

Are you focused on LAN transfer rates or internet download speeds? Which ONT model does Verizon provide? What speed tier are you using? I currently have a 1Gb plan, but my ONT can't handle anything faster. If I upgraded to the 2Gb plan (still not available nearby), they would install a 2.5GbE and a 10GbE ONT. Are all the network interfaces in this setup 2.5GbE capable?

You don't notice these rates when performing specific tasks. If you're uploading files online or running a speed test, your connection will be capped by your ISP's plan. For example, a 100 Mbps plan means you won't exceed that limit. When testing between computers on the same network, speeds can reach up to 2.5 Gbps only if both devices have matching performance, the cables support it, and storage drives are capable of handling that rate (like SATA SSDs or faster).

Modern HDDs, especially big ones, can handle 2Gbit for big transfers, though they usually slow down as they fill up more. Older drives are generally capped around 1Gbit. There are other factors too—like I only receive 200MB/s on an encrypted SATA SSD, but random access would be much quicker than with an HDD. I'm referring to network speeds here; it's rarely faster than the drive itself writes, since networking adds a lot of overhead. Unless you're using something like iSCSI, which mimics local storage and cuts down on those delays, performance isn't as smooth.
