Windows avoids trying to reinstall devices missing from the system. I’m not suggesting using a fresh Windows setup for every major hardware change.

Certainly, you can eliminate ghost drivers from your setup. I suggest using a tool named Ghostbuster. Proceed with care and choose only drivers you’re certain are linked to older hardware—avoid those connected to things like disconnected webcams. First, verify other settings unrelated to drivers; altering virtual memory can cause issues with the new setup. Most importantly, if someone is troubleshooting your system but your symptoms suggest a hardware issue (such as BSOD, single display, poor performance/glitches), it’s likely a problem with the hardware itself. It’s wise to test your PC using a liveCD or USB before installing a new operating system, especially on a device that may already have faults.
