Considering the price similarity, which option offers better value: 3700x or 5600x? I understand the performance boost from Zen 3 is significant, but the physical core still favors the 3700x. The 5600x appears to match or exceed the multi-core capabilities of the 3700x, though I lack personal experience with either model. The RTX 2070 GPU is non-upgradeable, and I've seen thermal issues with the 5800x. A powerful cooler is advisable, but not for unnecessary heat generation. Regarding the MoBo replacement from B450 Tomahawk, you're aiming for a high-quality VRM package in the 5900 or 5950 range, ideally with 2.5GHz connectivity. The B550 Tomahawk seems like a strong contender under $200.
Focus on upgrading the GPU first; otherwise, a stronger CPU won’t noticeably boost performance. If your GPU is already powerful, the 5600X will outperform the 3700X. For the motherboard, consider it unless you require additional connectivity. The B450 Tomahawk should handle a 5900X at stock settings, so an upgrade isn’t necessary right now.
I just noticed this. The CPU upgrade won't make much of a difference. The benchmarks I saw are using a Titan RTX, and with a 2070, the gap between CPUs will shrink even more. It seems like you're likely aiming for a 5-10% boost from 2700 to 5600x.
Do you have the professional or free edition or the resolution? The free option doesn’t offer GPU boosts, so the CPU will handle things. I don’t think the 5800X will get much hotter than the 2700X—just a bit warmer maybe, but any regular aftermarket cooler should work fine.
@Grabhanem - we're running the studio version. The GPU boost works well, but with text overlays or many effects/CTAs we see a jump to CPU rendering which slows everything down. The CPU upgrade plus better RAM and possible PCIe 4 SSD upgrades helped us hit low 70s and 80s temps for a 5800x. Our best setup has two identical machines at home with low 60s temps thanks to solid case cooling.
You should figure out your budget first. The gap between 5600x and 5900x is significant in both cost and performance. The 5800x falls right in the middle. Thermal performance shouldn’t be an issue. It seems you have a choice: buy the 5600x now or upgrade to 5900x/5950x later, or keep the 2700 and jump straight to 5900x with a 5800x. Upgrading to 5900x later doesn’t seem practical. In my opinion, I’d hold onto the 2700 until I can upgrade directly to 5900x.
@boggy77 confirmed I noticed those charts too. The problem arises when switching between multiple text overlays—then the system only renders the current section, which greatly slows performance. Switching to the studio version helps.
