I have an Ethernet connection coming into my office from my bedroom. I’m considering a switch to connect more devices, but I’m unsure if I need a Gigabit switch since my router ports aren’t Gigabit and my current speed is around 40 down and 9 up.

Obtain a gigabit connection. It will operate at the maximum performance offered by the Ethernet cable.

It relies on how you move files between devices, such as with a NAS. If you're only setting up internet connections for these gadgets, opt for a "Fast" switch offering 100Mb/s instead of a Gigabit model, though higher-end switches usually aren't significantly pricier. Also keep in mind that your router should handle gigabit speeds since most include a built-in gigabit port. The internet connection (WAN) is typically the main constraint, not the hardware itself.

It's the Talktalk supplied fibre router; it's a bit tricky to handle.

This link points to a product page on eBay. It appears to be for an unmanaged gigabit Ethernet switch from D-Link.

Your internet speed might decrease with additional devices connected.
