I'm swapping out my CPU and planning to upgrade from Intel Core i5-6400 to i5-9400F. I'm checking if my SDK0J40700 motherboard supports the i5-9400F. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You require a motherboard compatible with the 300 series chipset. Options include H310, B360, H370, Z370 or Z390.

The 9th generation CPU needs a 300 series motherboard. You can upgrade to the best options like an i7 6700 or i7 7700, but you'll need to install the latest BIOS.

Reject this idea. Boards designed for 6th/7th generation Intel won't function with 8th/9th generation Intel unless you resort to BIOS modifications, which isn't practical. The most viable option would be an i7 7700K/7700/6700 (or similar 6th/7th gen i5) or another 6th/7th gen i5. A BIOS update might be necessary, but even 7th generation support on a standard board isn't guaranteed. The safest choice remains 6th generation. However, an i5 6th generation chip offers only modest improvements.

6th and 7th generation processors come with dedicated motherboards, while 8th and 9th generation models use separate boards. Sadly, the top options tend to be around an i7 6700 or 7700, which are costly when you buy used.

I don't know the exact model, but I can suggest compatible CPUs based on your system's specifications.

6700k is the top CPU choice that fits your board perfectly. 7700k might function or not, depending on circumstances or whether the maker included BIOS support for it.
