Applefreak’s suggestions were accurate. I also scoured through older discussions and discovered several attempts using dual-core processors that didn’t work because they weren’t compatible. In short, it doesn’t seem to be a viable option.

The conclusion is no, avoid the temptation of prebuilt OEM products from HP, Dell, Toshiba and similar companies. While they might appear more affordable initially, they often lead to long-term issues.

I’m getting 20 dollars and I’ll install the top CPU it can handle—it’s solid for Google and Zoom, so it should work fine for your mom.

It really comes down to the intended use. A budget gaming rig can work well with an old i7 laptop—just make sure the PSU is straightforward to swap and you have enough RAM, storage, and a decent GPU like the RX 580. However, there are many subpar options available if you're not careful.

it's not always clear. a) you need to pick a certain power supply since not every one works, b) there could be limits with GPU compatibility so upgrading to a better one might not be possible—it won't run properly. it feels like a good offer, but once everything is set up it should function well; however, upgrades can be really tricky and you wish you had more money for a custom build.

Absolutely, not everyone follows the same rules. Many devices come with 25 or 35W power limits in the PCIe slot, plus some unique connectors or BIOS restrictions. It's important to thoroughly investigate before purchasing used.

That's a Wolfdale Core 2 model. These aren't available for support.

You need to purchase a new CPU, specifically an E6750 model.
