Hi there! Your friend is switching from an older SSD to a bigger one, which is a smart upgrade. Since the current OS is gone, reinstalling Windows from an external SSD could work well. Just make sure to back up any important data first, and follow the proper steps for formatting the new SSD.

You can transfer partitions from the old system drive to a new one for free with tools like macrium reflect. Ensure both drives are connected simultaneously via m.2, SATA, or USB adapter, based on the SSD type.

Your idea is feasible but requires careful handling. Disconnecting the HDD and then restarting the system should allow you to transfer data from the old SSD to the new one. Since your setup has only two SATA ports and no M.2 slot, you’ll need to use a single SATA port for both the old and new drives. Ensure the new SSD is properly seated and connected before booting.

That's the approach I'd take. The main concern I see is compatibility issues with the allocation size between the old and new SSDs, though that seems unlikely. If you have a spare PC, there are solutions to address this.
