Surface Pro 4 issues with the motherboard
I swapped a screen on a Surface Pro 4 that was used as a frisbee by someone else. The screen was completely shattered, and the device won’t power on. I’m looking for a board schematic to help trace parts and fix the issue. Is this actually available publicly? Or has Micro$oft kept it secret behind legal barriers? I get it most people just decide to replace it and move forward. But I’m budget-conscious and enjoy tinkering, so if there’s even a small chance I can solder a few components back together and get it working again—that’s my plan. Plus, things are getting worse, so I need someone who knows the ins and outs. Do you have any copies?
Sadly, such components don't exist. Not since the first Surface model. If you’ve seen what Louis Rossman encountered, you might notice something odd on the board—like a faulty capacitor or similar issue. Whatever happened, it could have been a trace damage. It might be possible to repair it, but it would likely require careful work.
Sadly, when surface devices go they tend to go. Given the shock yours endured, I would imagine a solder joint broke somewhere. 9/10 chance its a BGA chip, and the tools to work on those are more expensive than a new MOBO. Also, its next to impossible to remove an adhered surface screen without breaking it, so add that cost back in. The true answer really is give up, sadly.
Hey tthomason, you might want to check the closet for that blown resistor. Also, diodes near the display connector on the FPC often fail. Surface Schematics for any model seem to be missing at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMGikVXxdBY
