Hi! It seems this might not be the right spot, but here’s what I’ve noticed. I’ve owned my laptop, Surface Book 2 13" I7 8GB for several years. Occasionally I face major Wi-Fi stability or speed problems lately. I’m seeing speeds in the low range—sometimes just a few Mbps or below 1 Mbps at 30 ms latency—which makes streaming YouTube 720p impossible. Even loading news sites can take a long time. Sometimes it switches to the 4 GHz band by accident. My routers are Asus ZenWiFi XT8, two connected via cable. Other devices connect smoothly, with fast, lag-free links up to about 250 Mbps (the speed I expect).
My troubleshooting steps so far:
- Restarted the laptop – no change.
- Disabled all 2.4 GHz transmitters/receivers – helped a bit but not enough.
- Checked Wi-Fi drivers – they seem fine in Windows.
- Ran the Windows network troubleshooter – found nothing.
- Followed a guide: reset the TCP/IP stack using Command Prompt commands.
- Executed various network reset commands: netsh winsock reset, ip reset, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew, ipconfig /flushdns.
After completing those steps, Wi-Fi performance dropped even more. The Command Prompt was run as admin and the laptop restarted afterward. My temporary fix is using my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note8) to connect via hotspot, which works much better. It’s frustrating—it shouldn’t be this slow, but it’s really inconvenient. I’m also trying to use only one screen, keyboard, and mouse from the laptop, but that’s the only adjustment I can think of.
Any suggestions on why this is happening or how to resolve it?
