It seems the link to the router is the probable cause. I think our modem supports DOCSIS 3.0 16x4, which might explain the problem.

He might install Cat5 standard using phone lines. That’s something I’ve done before. If the problem is wireless, avoid switching to a different modem. You can convert RJ45 to RJ15 cables that support the older Cat5 standard, allowing you to utilize existing phone wiring.

We should have been more specific; our device is a Sagemcom Fast 5260 router.

You should first check whether weak or unstable Wi-Fi is the problem or if your ISP’s service is experiencing issues. Test your connection on other devices—do they stay online with Wi-Fi or lose it completely? Also, see if the issue occurs with wired connections or just Wi-Fi. If you’re still unsure, try connecting a PC directly via Ethernet to confirm stability.

My setup remains fairly consistent, but for my brother it’s far from the router and he keeps disconnecting. I might attempt to use Ethernet everywhere in the house.

Are you sure about the age of your home? It’s likely the phone jack contains Cat5 or Cat5e wiring underneath.

Do you have any indication on signal strength on your brothers device? If the WIFI signal is bad / poor, you should probably have a decent indication of that. Most devices are fitted with a bar / signal strength meter (Software-wise). If its low signal strength, then you most likely need to look at options to improve WIFI signal strength. On the other hand, if his device(s) has good signal strength, and it suddenly drops out, I would think that perhaps the router is worn out, or maybe you have an external factor within your house which suddenly makes the signal worse.

It's quite poor. The 5 GHz isn't working at all, while the 2.4 GHz is functional but not very reliable.

Remove one of the faceplates to access the cables connected to the phone jack. Check if it's cat5 (Category 5) or higher. If yes, consider swapping it for an RJ45 jack. Otherwise, attempt a homemade cable using two Ethernet pairs and a phone cable or powerline adapter.
