I possess a fresh installation but overlooked the operating system version. If I removed the HDD from my HP Pavilion G6 and reinstalled the system, would it function properly with the new build if I restore it using recovery and wipe?

I've relied on outdated storage devices in recent projects. My thought is likely yes, it should function, even if it claims not to be an authentic copy—just the product key is needed.

Search for a Windows 8.1 ISO file online and apply the activation code during installation. Using the hard drive without a complete reinstall often leads to a blue screen before booting.

You have flexibility in choosing a secondary drive for new or different systems. That’s not an issue. Starting from a drive removed from another setup can be more challenging. Often you encounter boot loops or BSODs after launching Windows logo. On laptops with built-in drivers, mixing drives between OS and external hardware isn’t possible. At least on Windows systems.
