I previously asked about performance when using an external USB 3.0 for gaming, and some advised I should wait. Now I’ve tried two games: a 1TB 5400RPM external drive versus an SSD. The results were great—loading times were fast and consistent, with no noticeable drop in performance. I only experienced a slight delay in Dirt Rally, about ten seconds longer, which gave me time to relax and enjoy a coffee or smoke. I plan to test more games soon.

Once it's stored in memory, it doesn't matter. It would only be important if there wasn't enough memory and loading took too long.

I prioritize speed and compactness by using the fastest SSD for the operating system, another for select games, and the remainder on external storage. You'll notice certain titles must be installed on internal drives, especially Ubisoft AC games. I've observed some COD titles refusing to launch until moved to internal storage. There are more I can't recall at the moment. You'll become better at spotting which games need relocation when you encounter a soft crash during launch.
