I preferred the straightforward xfce interface, but disliked the package manager. After switching to the gnome software store, during a cache refresh it functioned but kept running even after loading. It managed to install apps, though it remained blocked.

It remains there with near-perfect accuracy, and after a long time it doesn’t change.

Have you attempted starting it via the terminal to check for issues? Also, use Synaptic. It's simple and functions identically.

It seems you're referring to a sense of completion in the game store, but it's a bit more than just the command prompt.

Because it’s mostly a family computer and I’m the sole Linux user, efforts should focus on maintaining a tidy setup.

This is a common issue. Gui software manager often freezes, take forever to refresh/load and hang on software installation. On top of that, many do not show all the packages that you need. As a result I exclusively use the terminal. If you must use gui, I suggest you use synaptic or if you are on suse, yast which are the only two gui software managers I used so far that have comparable experiences to a terminal utility.

The distribution you're using affects its behavior. Different ones handle terminal starts and errors differently. If you launch it from the terminal, you should see any relevant messages or warnings.
