Hey, I have a query about connectors for Cat6 cables. My home uses Cat6 wiring, but I need to install RJ45 connectors on the ends using my crimp tool. Was I wondering if I should use Cat6 connectors or are RJ45 connectors interchangeable? Also, is speed the main factor for Cat6, or is it just the cable itself? Thanks! #LLT

If the connector matches Cat 5e specifications, it should work properly.

Beauty comes from the way you arrange the cables in the crossover setup, not just the standard method.

Maintain the same arrangement of wires at both ends of the cable. It doesn’t matter which end you choose, though manufacturers often favor cables with green on the left side. A crossover connection is only necessary for very old 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps network cards; otherwise, a direct link between two cards can be established without a switch or hub. Yes, technically speaking, if you’re precise, using Cat6a connectors with Cat6a cable is ideal. Nonetheless, the industry standard supports Ethernet cables up to 100 meters for reliable performance, especially at higher speeds like 10 Gbps. For shorter distances—up to 10 to 25 meters—basic RJ45 connectors (Cat5e or Cat6) are sufficient; minor manual crimping won’t significantly weaken the signal.

Be careful with the wire size. A CAT6 23 AWG cable may not fit a CAT5/5e connector.

I listened closely to your experience. Using cat5 connectors with CAT6 cables gave mixed results—sometimes it worked, other times not. The main issue was difficulty seating the cable properly. Switching to the correct connectors improved the outcome significantly.

You used the Cat5 cable and managed to get it working. Looking back, it makes sense since it was tricky to install correctly... unless it wasn't meant to fit. Now it's working! Thanks everyone!
